As the UK enters a recession, businesses have been warned not to cut corners when it comes to health and safety.
Nattasha Freeman, the new president of the Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (IOSH), said firms that try to make savings by cutting corners could end up going out business, reports Building.co.uk.
During a speech at the IOSH annual dinner, Ms Freeman told delegates: "Companies need professional, competent health and safety advice because one accident could put them out of business.
"Accidents and ill health place a huge strain on budgets, so it makes sense for firms to do all they can to not have them."
With more than 33,000 members, including 13,000 chartered safety and health practitioners, IOSH is the leading organisation for health and safety professionals in Europe.
Formed in 1945, the institute is officially recognised by the International Labour Organisation an international non-governmental body.
