Holidaymakers warned about home insurance

People preparing to go on holiday have been advised to check their home insurance policies before jetting off.

Home insurance expert Darren Black warned that many insurance policies are invalidated if the homeowner is absent from the property in question for more than 30 days at a time.

Mr Black commented: "For anyone planning on a month-long stay, whatever the time of year, it is essential that they make sure that there is someone staying in the house at some point whilst they are away to make sure home owners do not inadvertently invalidate their cover."

He also advised travellers to arrange for a neighbour to keep an eye on the property, cancel milk deliveries and make sure security is maximised at all points of entry.

People should also refrain from revealing their travel plans on social networking websites such as Bebo and Facebook.

The Times recommends that holiday home owners or those who leave their properties for a long period should acquire an insurance policy specific to their needs.
