UK homeowners are risking costly insurance claims as a result of circumstances that are easily preventable, it has been claimed.
According to industry expert Keith Hester, although natural disasters such as flooding and freak tornados are on the rise if the UK, it is smaller everyday occurrences that account for most accidents.
"Everyday seemingly harmless actions such as this can result in huge financial loss - not to mention physical risk - and drive up renewal premiums," he said.
Mr Hester warned that homeowners were at most risk at Christmas, Halloween and Bonfire Night.
He recommends that homes should be made as inaccessible as possible to burglars and valuable items should be removed from view.
Research suggests that people are likely to be spending less this Christmas.
A survey by business advisory group Deloitte suggests consumers are likely to spend seven per cent less than last year on Christmas preparations.
