Cockroach infestation closes takeaway

Food and drink

5th November 2008

A takeaway in Langley has been closed down after inspectors found it was infested with cockroaches, it has been reported.

Kinara restaurant on the High Street in the town was inspected last Wednesday by environmental health officers but after finding the infestation they obtained an Emergency Prohibition Order to shut the premises down.

Levine Whitham, senior environmental health officer for Slough Borough Council, said that the place can only reopen when inspectors are satisfied that it is no longer a risk to the health of the public.

He said: "In all my experience, I’ve never seen such a heavy infestation of German cockroaches."

The same takeaway has previously been at odds with the environmental health, receiving a fine for almost £14,000 two years ago after committing eight separate offences.

Many providers of takeaway insurance will seek assurance from customers that adequate standards of cleanliness and safety are in place before offering a policy.

Takeaways and restaurants who sell good to the public should ensure that they have product liability insurance in place to protect against claims of selling damaged goods or products not "fit for purpose".
