New tip rules for restaurants

Food and drink

5th November 2008

Savvy restaurant owners will have finances and restaurant insurance policies in place, but now they have another thing to consider before opening for business after it was announced that restaurants will have to explain exactly where customers tips end up.

New government rules will mean that restaurants will have to make it clear to diners just how much of their tip will actually be given to waiters and waitresses, after concerns that many eateries were paying below the minimum wage and relying on tips to top up earnings for staff.

High street chains such as Caffe Uno and Carluccios have come under fire in the past for apparently paying staff under the minimum wages and using gratuities to bolster pay cheques.

The new system will be a consideration for the owners of two new restaurants set to open in Coventry city centre.

Both establishments will offer Pan Asian food and will offer diners the chance to see their food cooked in front of them, reports the Coventry Telegraph.
