The drop in UK house prices has led to a growing number of first-time buyers taking their first step on the property ladder, it has been claimed.

According to new data from the National Association of Estate Agents, the gloom in the housing market could lift slightly.

Between August and September, the number of people buying a house for the first time increased from 8.3 per cent to 9.5 per cent.

Leslie Deans, senior partner of Leslie Deans and Co, a member of the Edinburgh Lothians Property Group of estate agents, said: "Things are now considerably better than they were six weeks ago. Liquidity and the flow of funds has improved and it is a lot easier for people to get mortgages. There are a lot more deals around than there were."

In related news, the government has announced new measures to boost the housing market and allow more people to buy their own homes, reports mortgagebrokers4london.co.uk.
