Company managers and safety professionals have been reminded that leadership and effective process safety should be high on their agendas.
Speaking at the Cefic Responsible Care Conference, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) chair Judith Hackitt said bosses must monitor the effectiveness of internal controls to avoid major incidents and losses.
"Process safety performance indicators can provide assurance that major hazard risks are under control and this is just as applicable and important for small and medium sized businesses," she commented.
In revised guidance on development safety performance indicators, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development recognised the HSE had increased assurance on risk management and a protected reputation.
Cefic aims to develop a prosperous chemical industry in Europe by earning public trust and achieving effective public policy.
The organisation's annual conference attracts up to 150 delegates from 28 national chemical industry associations and their member companies throughout the continent.
