A campaign has been launched to cut the number of people killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, following a recent survey that found one in 30 believe they have been affected by it.
The Carbon Monoxide - Be Alarmed campaign encourages homeowners and landlords to be aware of the symptoms of poisoning and ensure audible alarms are fitted in all residential properties.
Just six per cent of those surveyed by YouGov said they felt "very confident" they would recognise the symptoms of gas poisoning, which include nausea, dizziness and tiredness.
Nigel Dumbrell, chairman of the Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance, commented: "Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that has no colour, taste or smell - it is impossible to detect without an alarm."
Landlords can protect themselves and their tenants by ensuring adequate detectors are fitted in their homes and by making sure they are also covered by an insurance policy.
