Speedboat accident 'a warning' to marine craft owners

Personal insurance

21st October 2008

An accident in which a speed boat capsized is a timely warning for boat owners without proper insurance.

Three men were rescued after their speedboat capsized in the Firth of Forth, reports BYM Marine and Maritime News.

A fourth man swam ashore and was able to raise the alarm.

The rescued men were all suffering from hypothermia and were transferred to a waiting ambulance at Dysart harbour.

Calum MacDonald, watch manger for Forth Maritime and Rescue Coordination Centre, commented: "All the crew were inexperienced, but were at least wearing light buoyancy aids which certainly aided their survival as they were in the water for nearly an hour."

He emphasised the importance of always wearing a lifejacket and taking a reliable form of communication such as a VHF radio.

Other means of attracting attention, such as flares, could also come in handy in the event of an accident while at sea.

According to a boat insurance expert: "If you love spending time aboard your vessel, you'll want to insure that you are protected by boat insurance."
