The death of a market gardener who died after being hit by a JCB was entirely preventable, safety officials have claimed.
Anthony Cripps, 57, was killed when he was run over by a seven tonne JCB Loadall being operated by an unqualified driver, according to the Banbury Guardian.
Mr Cripps was struck by the machine after falling out of its bucket which he was being transported in along with a second man, a two-day inquest in Gloucester was told.
Health and Safety Executive specialist mechanical engineer Dr Dominic Swan commented: "This accident could have been avoided if passengers were not travelling in the bucket. There was significantly less movement in the bucket when the anti-bounce was switched on. When switched off, the bucket bounced around."
In similar news, the Telegraph reported recently that a young boy died after he was accidentally hit by a JCB being driven by his father.
Firms using JCBs should make sure their liability insurance policies are up-to-date in case of an accident.
