Care centre closed after legionella scare

Care home

13th October 2008

A Merseyside day care centre was shut down after a potentially fatal bug was found in the water supply, it has been reported.

The bug, which can lead to pneumonia, diarrhoea, delirium and legionnaire's disease, was discovered during a routine inspection at the Holt Hall centre in Belle Vale.

Local councillor Janet Kent told the Liverpool Echo: "I am appalled that this administration has accommodated some of our most vulnerable residents in a building, by their own admission, unfit for purpose and which put lives in jeopardy."

According to a spokesman for the Health Protection Agency, it is not uncommon to find the legionella bug in stagnant water.

In related news, H & V News reports that the Health Protection Agency has said it does not support the use of products containing silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide to fight legionella.
