Consumers are becoming increasingly worried about businesses losing their personal information, it has been revealed.
New research from RSA reveals 56 per cent of people have greater concerns about the security of their data and identity fraud than six months ago.
Furthermore, 90 per cent of Britons believe their personal information held by online auction sites, banks and retailers is not completely secure.
And more than 868,000 people admit to having left work documents or a computer device in a public place.
Desmond Cross, director of retail at RSA, said: "Companies must act immediately to address the concerns of their customers by managing risk in all areas of their business."
He added even "small" breaches in the confidentiality of customer information can cause widespread concern and have a negative effect on the reputation of the company.
Last week, Apacs, the UK payments association, said online banking fraud rose by 185 per cent year-on-year to £21.4m for the first half of 2008.
