Property developer fined for safety breach

Construction

3rd October 2008

A property developer based in Chorley has been fined over £10,000 after admitting to breaching health and safety rules.

Investigators from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that a damaged boundary fence had allowed children to gain entry to the site where the firm was building 100 new houses.

The police has been called to the area after local residents raised fears for the children's safety.

Alasdair Green, prosecuting for the HSE, said the construction industry is one of the most dangerous sectors in the UK and around 70 people are killed a year on building sites.

He commented: "This company received numerous warnings, both from the HSE and from its own safety experts, about areas where it needed to improve, but it failed to take heed of the warnings. This company must take safety issues seriously."

Firms can protect themselves by taking out Public Liability insurance.
