UK golf courses are among the most common sources of sports-related personal liability claims, it has emerged.

The liability claims often derive from facial injuries caused by golfers who tee off without checking that the coast in clear.

Insurance claims for sporting-relating injuries have surged as the British sporting calendar has kicked off.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at a UK insurance firm, said liability insurance is an important way of being protected against a potentially costly claim.

He said: "Although it is one of the rarest, it is also the most serious types of claim. In the case of sports injuries, home contents cover may be the only safety net between an individual and a six or seven figure claim against their assets."

Liability claims can also affect those involved in horse-riding, those with swimming pools and those organising fireworks displays.

People with domestic animals have also been advised to ensure they are kept them under control.
