'Inform insurers' before extending homes

Construction

2nd October 2008

Landlords and homeowners who are planning to extend their properties have been advised to let their insurance provider know before carrying out construction work.

According to a report from the Move Channel, DIY building projects that aim to make significant structural changes to a property might not be covered by a buildings insurance policy.

As of yesterday (October 1st), homeowners in England are no longer required to seek planning permission before converting loft space into accommodation or building extension to the rear of their home.

Nick Laird, the manager of an insurance firm, commented: "These new regulations will make it a lot easier for homeowners in England who want to build rear extensions or carry out loft conversions, though people should still check exactly what they do and don't need permission for."

In other advice from the BBC, people doing noisy DIY work in their homes should inform their neighbours beforehand as an act of courtesy.
