National Fork Lift Safety Week held
Construction
22nd September 2008
This week marks the first ever National Fork Lift Safety Week.
According to the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), September will be the deadliest of the year for the construction industry.
The association claims that two UK workers will be killed by fork lifts this month and has launched a campaign to end what it described as the "unacceptably high toll of death and injury".
"Although they do an unparalleled amount of good work, the UK's 350,000 fork lift trucks account for more serious accidents at work than cars and HGVs combined, hospitalising over 400 employees each year," said the FLTA.
Research suggests that as many as two-thirds of accidents involving the vehicles kill or injure the person who was not driving. Therefore anyone visiting or employed at one of the 100,000 firms estimated to be use fork lifts could be at risk of death or injury, which could have serious consequences for firms without Public Liability Insurance.
National Fork Lift Safety Week is held from September 22nd until 28th.
