Caterers could 'escape' downturn

Food and drink

18th September 2008

Food and manufacturers supplying the wedding industry might not be hit as hard by the credit crunch as companies in other sectors.

A recent survey of exhibitors at the British Bridal Exhibition in Harrogate found that 61 per cent thought the industry had not been badly affected by the current economic slowdown.

Research involving 1,500 brides found that the wedding reception is the single biggest wedding day expense costing an average of £7,724.

Catering costs an average of £3,497, while drinks cost £1,242 and entertainment £456.

However, designer Lawrence Goldberg of Ele Weddings, said that wedding attire, not catering, was the main concern for brides forced to tighten their belts.

"In the credit crunch maybe they will cut back on the food and the buffet and cut back on flowers, but the wedding dress will always be number one for the bride," he commented.

According to a survey by You & Your Wedding magazine, the average cost of a wedding is now £20,273.
