The lowest carbon car on the market could be coming to UK dealerships in 2009.

According to the Low Carbon Economy, the supermini diesel Smart ForTwo CDI could be hitting UK streets early next year.

The vehicle - which accelerates from 0-60 miles per hour in 19.8 seconds - emits significantly less carbon than European Union (EU) targets and comes fitted with a closed particulate filter to reduce the amount of air pollution released through its exhaust.

Smart ForTwos are powered by a super-efficient diesel engine that emits just 88 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. Current EU targets are set at 130 grams per kilometre.

The Fair Investment Company reported that an increasing number of insurance companies are greening their operations.
