UK job market in weakest state for 9 years, research claims

The British job market is in its weakest state for nearly nine years, according to new global research.

One of the of the word's largest recruitment companies, Manpower, surveyed over 55,000 employers in 33 countries about their hiring intentions.

The findings have potential ramifications for those without recruitment insurance.

In three-quarters of the surveyed countries, employers' hiring intentions were weaker than during the last quarter, while two-thirds said they much worse, reported the Financial Times.

Manpower UK managing director Mark Cahill said it remains unclear exactly how long the current economic climate will go on for.

"This uncertainty is being reflected by new recruitment plans being put on hold and with slightly more employers now looking to reduce their staff numbers than add to them," he said.

In the three months to June, unemployment levels in the UK increased by 60,000 to 1.67 million.

Last month, Britain saw the largest rise in unemployment since 1992.
