EngineSure
Engine breakdown extended warranty for pre-owned motor boats
EngineSure, developed by Dickson insurance, is a specialist engine breakdown insurance cover for motor boat diesel engines. The Warranty provides for the costs of the major repair or complete replacement of diesel engines in the event of mechanical failure. EngineSure insures against such risks as crankshaft damage, piston or liner failure, gearbox breakdown or other catastrophic failure.
The risks
Many motor boat owners will know of someone who has needed to replace an engine - if not two - as a result of a catastrophic mechanical engine failure. Even with the benefit of recent surveys and oil analysis reports, engines can, and do, fail catastrophically.
To replace just one engine in an Astondoa 46 for example, can cost up to £38,000, and for a Princess 65 as much as £80,000.
It is therefore not surprising that purchasers often choose to buy a new boat with the benefit of a manufacturer's warranty.
Now, Dickson Insurance is enabling boat owners to secure an engine warranty for the resale boat market. In addition to providing peace of mind to the boat owner, EngineSure warranted boats can also be offered for sale as a much more attractive proposition.
With EngineSure included as part of the sale, a motor boat may sell quicker and command a higher price than a non-warranted boat, making the cost of this invaluable protection potentially self-financing.
EngineSure is available for diesel powered marine engines manufactured by Caterpillar, GM, MAN, MTU or Volvo. Engines must not have exceeded 1000 hours use since new and be under 10 years old.
Increase the saleability of your boat
To a certain extent modern survey techniques have only served to make a purchaser's concern greater because so often an oil analysis can be inconclusive. For example it can note minor wear and recommend further regular monitoring. This alone can cause many a buyer to withdraw from a contract unnecessarily. Conversely even with an A1 survey it is not unheard of for an engine to fail catastrophically within a further 100 hours of use.
EngineSure completely eliminates these worries when buying second hand. It is a warrantee that will pay the entire cost of replacing one or two engines including related dismantling, removal and disposal of old engine, crane, haul out, new engines fitted by manufacturer-approved installers, re-assembly, and sea trial. It is aimed at boats in the £100,000 to £750,000 price range, and up to 10 years old or 1000 hours. It applies to engines made by Caterpillar, GM, Man, MTU or Volvo. It is EU wide. The warrantee can be arranged through approved yacht brokers or by the boat owner. It does not cover minor breakdowns where the repair bill is less than 20% of the engine's list price.

With EngineSure, a motor boat becomes more desirable and can command a higher price. With two new engines in a Ferretti 65 costing well over £150,000 it is easy to see the attraction of the EngineSure Warranty.
EngineSure is the brainchild of Dickson Insurance. Dickson has a reputation for working closely with multinational companies and innovating products at the cutting edge of the insurance market. This, and their reliability of service, gained Dickson Insurance the accolade of "Insurance Broker of the Year 1999". Paul Dickson also just happens to own a Princess, bought with the benefit of a vague oil analysis report, so he knows what he is talking about in more ways than one.
